The phenomenon of “viral videos” with cute animals starring, that are most viewed on Youtube is a common occurrence. This time, the star was a clam on a table, which seems to stick its “tongue” out in order to “lick” the salt on it.
The video was apparently viewed by researchers however, who think differently about what goes on with the clam. “That’s the clam’s foot, that is not its tongue, says Miriam Goldstein, a post-graduate student and researcher of biological oceanography at the Scripps Institute of Oceanography. “This clam is trying to dig into the table unsuccessfully”, says Dr. Dennis Hedgecock in agreement, a professor of biological sciences at the University of Southern Carolina. “He’s not eating the salt”.
