Remember the virtual reality glasses that agent Jayden had in the Heavy Rain video game? How about Pierce Brosnan’s glasses in the Lawnmower Man movie? If you answered yes to the above, then Canon’s new technology will seem familiar to you. It’s Mixed Reality, a pair of glasses with monitors, that use stereoscopic cameras with a “free curve” prism.
This way, it produces virtual objects that can be placed (so to speak) near or above real ones. Canon makes clear that initially, Mixed Reality is intended for use in automotive design. It will function as an advanced CAD application and will replace mock-ups. Implementation of this technology is close, and the company will in fact soon release the SDK for those interested in developing compatible applications.
